IFCC-Abbott Visiting Lecturer Programme (VLP)
1. Guiding principles of the VLP
1.1 Accessibility:
All National Societies should be ensured access to the knowledge
base of standard operating procedures, quality assurance,
accreditation, cost effective management, diagnostic strategies and
other advances in the field of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory
Medicine. The types of educational experiences requested and the
topics for the lectures should fall within the scope of the EMD and
the Scientific Division of the IFCC.
1.2 Partnership:
The EMD will strive to form active partnerships, and to foster
educational interactions with the National Societies through the
VLP. The needs of the National Societies must be central in terms
of the appropriateness of the lectures which are proposed and that
may be approved by the EMD. The success of the Visiting Lecturer
Programme will be continuously monitored through reports received
by Visiting Lecturers on conclusion of such a programme.
2. Who qualifies for an IFCC-Abbott Visiting Lecturer
Programme?
2.1 Any National Society which is a member of the IFCC can
apply.
2.2 Provision is also made for non-member societies which could be
visited in conjunction with a visit of the lecturer to a
neighbouring country which has member status of the IFCC. In this
case, the EMD/VLP would not pay for travel to the non-member
country and those expenses will need to be paid by that
country.
3. Application Procedure
3.1 How to apply:
By filling out the application form.
If the visiting lecturer will be visiting more than one National
Society, please fill out multiple applications, one for each member
society country visited. Please submit these multiple applications
together (at the same time).
3.2 When to apply for the VLP:
Applications will be received throughout the year. However,
because of the time involved in the review and approval process,
plus the planning time needed by the National Society, applications
must be submitted at least 4 months prior to the proposed VLP. It
is important for the National Society to clearly identify the topic
to be presented, the goals and expected outcomes from the visit. In
addition, the clinical and educational expertise of the audience
should be indicated. In identifying the lecturer the following
aspects will be considered: the primary attributes for the lecturer
are the expertise in the topic area, ability to speak clearly and
to interact well with people. The National Society may propose a
specific individual for the VLP, or if none is identified, the EMD
can recommend an appropriate speaker. If the EMD identifies a
speaker, a special attempt will be made to designate a lecturer who
speaks the language of the country visited, or a language
understood by most of the professional people there. A National
Society may nominate members for possible consideration as visiting
lecturers to other countries.
3.3 Information required for appropriate planning and
preparation:
Profiles of the society and the clinical settings where the
lecture(s) will be given will be valuable and will enable the
Visiting Lecturer to target his/her educational material resulting
in greater efficiency.
3.4 The funding of the programme:
The IFCC, through a generous sponsorship by Abbott Diagnostics,
will cover travel expenses involved in the travel of the lecturer
from his home to the country to be visited. However, funds are
limited and will not cover travel within the country, or to
neighbouring countries, or most if not all of the per diem. The
National Society must agree to cover the remaining expenses of the
lecturer within its country (travel and accommodation/per
diem).
4. Expectations of the Visiting Lecturer
4.1 At the conclusion of the visit, the Visiting Lecturer will
provide to the chair of the programme, within two months of
completion of the visit, a summary report in English, describing
the visit, the lectures and locations given, the audience
participation and impressions of further educational needs of the
National Society and region. Any other information including
laboratory accreditation, proficiency testing programs, types of
testing done and laboratory management organisation would be
appreciated.
4.2 Member societies often ask for educational material for
certain topics from the EMD and also from the Visiting Lecturer.
Therefore, copies of the relevant documents and material produced
for the visit should be added to the summary report.
Applications will be acknowledged within 48 hours of receipt by
E-mail/fax or surface mail.
The EMD will process the application according to the mission and
guiding principles of the Visiting Lecturer Programme.
