SACKS (National Institutes of Health Department of Laboratory Medicine, Bethesda, MD, USA,), has been selected to receive the 2020 IFCC Distinguished Award for Laboratory Medicine and Patient Care sponsored by Sekisui Diagnostics. This award honours an individual who has made unique contributions in Laboratory Medicine, its application in improving patient care, and having a worldwide impact in clinical medicine. The IFCC is very pleased to acknowledge the support from Sekisui Diagnostics in the recognition of scientists and educators with a distinguished career in this area.
Dr Sacks ‘pioneering work has undoubtedly led to improvements in patient care, particularly related to screening, diagnosis and monitoring in patients with diabetes mellitus. He is one of the key individuals who has made a global impact and lasting clinical contributions in the field of diabetes, specifically in the area of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) standardization and glucose assays. Dr Sacks was chair of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI, formerly NCCLS) subcommittee that developed the C30-A guideline “Ancillary (Bedside) Blood Glucose Testing in Acute and Chronic Care Facilities” published in 2002, and now in its 3rd edition. Dr Sacks sustained and very substantial contributions to laboratory medicine and highlight the direct impact to patient care on a global level. Dr Sacks has undoubtedly made substantial contributions to the field and patient care. His lifelong commitment to improving and standardizing laboratory testing related to diabetes has positively influenced and directly impacted the lives of millions of individuals.

Doctor Sacks, along with nine other IFCC Distinguished Award winners, will be formally announced on Wednesday 6th January 2021 at the Opening Ceremony of the 24th WorldLab - IFCC International Congress in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine to be held in Seoul (South Korea) from 6th to 10th January 2021.
