Milan, 24 April 2020 - The IFCC, the international leading organization in the field of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, is pleased to announce that Dr Ghassan SHANNAN (Faculty of Pharmacy, Al Rasheed University, Damascus, Syria), has been selected to receive the IFCC Henry Wishinsky Award for Distinguished International Services, sponsored by Siemens. This award honours an individual who has made unique contributions to the promotion and understanding of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine throughout the world.
The IFCC is very pleased to acknowledge the support from Siemens in the recognition of scientists and educators with a distinguished career in this area.
Dr Shannan services for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine has been appreciated throughout the Arab Federation of Clinical Biology, AFCB and the IFCC community. He was a key figure in reactivation of the Arab Federation of Clinical Biology in 1991. He actively participated in the development of AFCB including the Continuous Education Programme for scientists in the Arab Federation Region. Dr Shannan initiated a full programme of Quality Management in Laboratory Medicine in 1989 for Syria. The programme included External Quality Assurance Scheme and Internal Quality Control, along with a full wide range of Chemistry, Haematology, Hormones, Tumor Markers and Thrombosis studies. Furthermore, the Syrian Programme was expanded to include Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. In addition, his activities in teaching Quality and Accreditation have went further to other countries like India, Turkey, South Africa and Slovenia. Dr. Shannan has established the Continuous Education Programme for Laboratory Medicine in Syria and other AFCB countries.

The 2020 IFCC Awardees are a witness of the contribution that IFCC gives to advancement of excellence in laboratory medicine for better healthcare worldwide. Doctor Shannan along with nine other IFCC Distinguished Award winners will be formally announced on Wednesday 6th January 2021 at the Opening Ceremony of the 24th WorldLab - IFCC International Congress in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine to be held in Seoul (South Korea) from 6th to 10th January 2021.
