IFCC has launched a new Working Group focusing on Cancer Genomics. The WG mission is to survey the currently used and emerging technologies in clinical cancer genomics and to establish a framework to guide clinical laboratories. The new WG, created under the EMD umbrella, is chaired by Dr Jason Park and co-chaired by Prof. Paolo Fortina. Its activities will focus on production of guidelines for clinical laboratories performing cancer diagnosis and on dissemination of the knowledge in the field at an international level.

The guest editor of the new themed issue of the eJIFCC is Mike Hallworth (UK), Chair of the IFCC Task Force on the Impact of laboratory medicine on Clinical management and Outcomes (TF-ICO). Laboratory medicine has a fundamental role in delivering safe and effective patient care, in diagnosis and management, risk assessment, and screening of healthy subjects for latent disease. Laboratory doctors and scientists of the future must be involved in producing guidelines for investigation, advising clinical staff on the best strategy for individual clinical presentations and the tests needed to confirm a diagnosis; ensuring that resources are used to do the right test on the right person at the right time.
