2020 12 05 IFCC eNews No 12 December 2020

12/05/2020

In her introduction, Dr. Katherina Psarra, eNews Editor, says: "We have arrived at the last issue of the eNews in 2020. This year has been really unprecedented for all of us. Sometimes it seems as if COVID-19 has erased the whole year. Laboratory people have worked hard, have accomplished a lot, and have proven how important laboratory work is for the health services so many rely on. In this issue, IFCC president Prof. Adeli explains the program of the IFCC Global Conference on COVID-19 that will take place virtually between February 15-17, 2021. After the great success of the first IFCC webinars, our president invites all IFCC committees and working groups to organize webinars in 2021, which we all hope will be a much better year. In this issue, Dr. Bernard Gouget sees some hope, some light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines and new treatments offer this hope. In this issue, hope also comes from the winning teams and participants of the UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence Award. Teamwork and cooperation have shown to be unbeatable, effective, full of hope. Full of hope is also the report on a new wonderful mentor-mentee relationship, and full of hope seem the reports of the virtual conferences of the IFCC societies all over the world. Let’s hope, dear colleagues, let’s hope for a brighter future, for bright luminous holidays, for a bright New Year!! Read and distribute the eNews to your colleagues to keep up with news and current activities around the laboratory medicine world!

11/30/2020

eJIFCC Vol 31 n° 4 is now available! In this issue: Ethics in laboratory medicine. Guest Editor is Dr. Nilda Fink (Argentina), on behalf of the IFCC Task Force on Ethics (TF-E). The field of ethics involves concepts and rules of right and wrong behaviour. Bioethics is defined as a branch of applied ethics that studies the philosophical, social, and legal issues arising in medicine and life sciences. Presently it is mandatory for different areas of Medicine to comply with ethical standards, and the field of Laboratory Medicine is no exception. This eJIFCC special issue presents a series of manuscripts that summarize relevant aspects of Ethics. Seven manuscripts are included; four of them are updating on classical ethical topics, two refer to more recent challenges in Ethics, and finally, but equally important, an opinion paper. 2020 11 26 APFCB News 2020-2

11/26/2020

The Asia-Pacific Federation for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine News 2020, issue 2, is now available. Despite these challenging times, Dr. Raja Elina, Chief Editor APFCB News, is pleased to bring you the second issue of the APFCB News 2020. Many countries around the world have been affected by Covid-19 pandemic. It has caused a global healthcare crisis and brought much sorrow. The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to and shown the importance of clinical laboratory testing to the overall treatment outcome of the patient like never before. Many among us are directly or indirectly involved and have contributed to the COVID-19 crisis, ranging from establishing a diagnosis, prognosis, disease staging, therapeutic drug monitoring, and epidemiologic surveillance studies. Although clinical laboratory professionals provide crucial data to doctors, they are often “forgotten warriors” in the fight to save a patient’s life. In this issue of the APFCB News, Mr. Joseph Lopez, past President of the APFCB, has contributed a lovely poem as a tribute to all Covid-19 fighters in healthcare and especially to those working in the laboratory. I take this opportunity to thank the IFCC for sharing the information on the various initiatives undertaken by the IFCC Global Taskforce on COVID-19. The work of this task force has been invaluable in supporting clinical laboratories around the world in the fight against COVID-19. Continuing with tradition, the cover-page of this issue of the APFCB News features the image of a painting graciously provided by Dr. Tan It Koon, founder and past President of APFCB. We are grateful to Dr. Tan It Koon for his unfailing support to the APFCB and for sharing with us his beautiful blue painting to view and enjoy in these difficult and troubling times.

2020 10 09 IFCC eNews No 10 October 2020

10/09/2020

In this issue, Dr. Katherina Psarra, eNews Editor comments: "I hope you are all well and at least enjoying the autumn colors in the countryside when you are not working in the labs all over the world, trying to cope with the unprecedented new situation. Nature can relieve the burden posed on our shoulders by COVID-19 and its consequences at work and at home. And when you cannot be near nature what could be an antidote to these difficult times? Education can play this role. IFCC is offering education to all of you through the well-known tools like eAcademy or professional exchange programs. Nowadays, when face to face meetings and conferences seem distant in the future, live webinars will play a central position in education. You have already attended, and you can revisit on-demand the first, very successful one on COVID-19 testing in the labs. The second one on lab-quality will be presented on October 15th, 2020. Don’t miss the opportunity for more education. A lot of information about IFCC educational plans can be found in our President’s inspiring article. In this eNews issue go through the news of the French and the Spanish societies, read the new COVID era article by Bernard Gouget: “Life with the virus”, how interesting and full of information! A young colleague from Turkey is also presenting her educational stay in Australia for the inspiration of young colleagues, inviting all of them to take advantage of the IFCC professional exchange programs. Read and distribute the eNews to your colleagues to keep up with news and current activities around the laboratory medicine world!

09/10/2020

In this issue, our President Prof. Khosrow Adeli is discussing with all of you the IFCC strategic plan, new taskforces are announced, the first series of LIVE IFCC webinars will be starting in September. Most of you have met Prof. Donald S. Young, who passed away recently. The entire IFCC community mourns his passing. His life is a perfect example of somebody dedicated to our job but, at the same time, to LIFE itself. He will be missed as Prof. Peter Wilding writes in his excellent article. Two interesting opinion articles on the new “meetings world” in the pandemic times are presented in this issue. Go through them: What do you think of the virtual meetings? Are face-to-face meetings necessary? Are they valuable? Shall we live in a virtual world? Take notice and respond, please, to the call for manuscript submission for a thematic eJIFCC issue on “Measurably better Healthcare.” If you wish to understand better the meaning of this title, go through the conversation with the eJIFCC issue editors Dr. Ellie Dow and Dr. Tim James about leading healthcare excellence. “A dose of AI in developing vaccines at pandemic speed." What a title! Dr. Bernard Gouget is offering a lot of exciting information on AI use in vaccine development. Keep healthy dear colleagues! And do try to entertain yourselves! 2020 08 24 What is the role of breath analysis (volatolomics) in testing for COVID-19?

08/24/2020

COVID-19 has changed all of our lives, and presented new diagnostic needs and opportunities. The IFCC WG on Volatolomics has surveyed the recent breath analysis literature (up to 8/2020) that is focused on COVID-19 testing. Universal concerns over contracting COVID-19, have meant that previous diagnostic test modalities may no longer be optimal. There is an increasing need, and also concomitant opportunities, for simple and rapid testing for COVID-19. Simplifying and increasing access to COVID-19 testing could become the new medical imperative and would also lay a foundation for addressing testing needs in future pandemics. Breath analysis (volatolomics) may provide a viable technology for rapid COVID-19 testing. Read the survey that can be found at

Summer is almost here. Outdoor activities are safer and offer the opportunity for a more normal life, for more joy but travel restrictions are still there and social life is unquestionably different. There are lots of questions about the future of conferences, seminars, and meetings. Most of them, like the IFCC EB, divisions, and working groups meetings are taking place at e-distance, a completely different experience from the face to face meetings, but still work is being done. Don’t forget that a new deadline has been announced for the Seoul 2021 WordLab abstracts, where we all hope to be together once more! Laboratorians of course keep working in the labs in research centers or hospitals and try to understand better this new disease. It is IFCC's ambition to keep members fully educated and informed. The special IFCC Information Guide on COVID-19 on the first page of the IFCC website is continuously renewed by the new IFCC Task Force on COVID-19, presented in this issue by its Chair, Prof. Giuseppe Lippi. In this issue of eNews, you will find an important editorial in Clin Chem Lab Med by the new IFCC President, Prof. Khosrow Adeli, on the “Critical role of laboratory medicine in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic”. A more “philosophical” and social look on the consequences of the epidemic is presented by Dr. Gouget. News from the societies, especially new members, are really interesting. The relationship between mentor and mentee may prompt young colleagues to explore and benefit from such opportunities. Try to find joy and happiness in everyday moments, dear colleagues. Pay attention to the small successes in your professional and personal life. Look forward to our next face to face meeting! Read and distribute the eNews to your colleagues to keep up with news and current activities around the laboratory medicine world!
